The Denis O’Leary Medical Educator Award

Dr Katy Newell-Jones - June 2026

The Denis O’Leary Medical Educator Award continues to thrive and inspire medical educators.

The expert panel who assess nominations and select award winners and runners up carried out a review of the section criteria, striving to continually improve the process and ensure that the award remains current.

Prof. Trevor Gibbs, who has served on the panel since its inception in September 2019, will step down from the panel. We are grateful for his support in establishing the award and insightful contributions during the process of assessing nominations and selecting the award winners. He brought his extensive experience of curriculum development in different parts of the world, with a commitment to innovation in hospital-based, primary and community-based care.

In 2026, OxCME is delighted to welcome Mr Georgios Kapetanakis onto the panel bringing expertise in Patient and Public Involvement another key aspect of the award.

At the AMSE annual conference in Croatia in October 2026, Dr Farshad Shaddel, director of OxCME, presented the award certificates to the 2025 winners in the presence of AMSE authorities.

OxCME did not make an award in 2026, however, the 2027 Denis O’Leary Award will be launched in September 2026, with nominations due by March 2027. Winners of the award will be invited again to present their award winning project at the 2027 ASME conference.

Further details of the award can be found on the OxCME website
