S12 Approved Doctor Refresher Course - Online

Aim of the Course

At the end of this one day course medical practitioners seeking renewal of their S12 (2) approval in the next 12 months, will have sufficient knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983, Code of Practice and other relevant legislation to enable them to continue acting a S12 approved doctor.

The online course consists of self-directed e-Learning modules with an interactive webinar. The self-directed e-Learning modules are sent in advance and should be completed by the day of Interactive webinar. The interactive webinar sessions are led by OxCME senior tutors. The course uses real and complex case studies, interactive quizzes, mini-lectures, small-group break-out sessions, practical exercises and legal updates to ensure delegates are fully equipped to take on the role of Section 12 doctors.

Please note that this course is just part of the S12 Approval process. The course is recognised nationally but please contact your local approval office to obtain an application pack and advice regarding the process to apply.

Course Objectives

​

  • To have a broad understanding of the provisions contained in Part 2 MHA relevant to the initial detention of a patient under Section 2, 3 and 4.

  • Be able to describe the role of a S12 (2) doctor and that of others when undertaking a MHA assessment.

  • Understand the meaning of, and be able to refer to, the criteria for detention under part 2 when making a medical recommendation.

  • Be able to describe the guidance contained in the Code of Practice relevant to the role and responsibilities of a S12(2) doctor when undertaking a MHA assessment.

  • To be able  to apply the legislation in a person-centred way and use knowledge of the impact that an assessment may have on patients and their carers to inform the approach to an assessment.

  • Be able to complete the statutory forms lawfully.
