Professor Trevor Gibbs

Professor Gibbs is currently an Independent Consultant in Health Professional Education, Professor of Medical Education and Clinical Practice at the Sun Yat-sen Medical University, Guangzhou China, Senior Advisor to the Association of Medical Schools in Europe and Professor of Medical Education at the Tbilisi State Medical School, Georgia.


As an Oncologist, General Practitioner and Academic for over forty five years, he has extensive experience in the development and delivery of Hospital-based, Primary Care and Community-based Education. He has been involved with many of the innovations in Education and Primary Care over these years, in the UK and overseas. 


    His experience in General Practice and Medical Education have given him the opportunity to hold inaugural professorships in many countries around the world, helping institutions develop their health professions curricula, at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Many of these positions were in regions in which medical and healthcare education is often a challenge. 


    He writes extensively on the subject of Medical Education, with a special interest in curriculum development, the practitioner of the future and the Social Accountability of Medical Schools. As Associate Editor of the international journal Medical Teacher,  he had the specific responsibility for the development of the AMEE Guides in medical education, the BEME Guides in medical education, the Medical Education around the World series, as well as general publication duties. 


The year 2019 saw Prof. Gibbs achieve the Gusi International Peace Prize for his work in International educational development.


From 2019 until 2022, he held the position of President of the Association for Medical Education in Europe. In 2022, he received the acclaimed Lifetime Achievement award, the highest award granted by the Association for Medical Education in Europe.
